AT Research and Catalyst Senior Ella Wessel, is writing her research paper on the Theory of Catharsis, which can be defined by Aristotle as “the purging of the emotions of pity and fear that are aroused in the viewer of a tragedy”. To test this theory, Ella asked SAS students to report their level of frustration before and after hammering nails into a piece of wood. She first induced frustration in her participants and asked them to hammer nails for one minute straight. After this, their frustration levels were reported and analyzed.

Ella's research showed that 5 out of 6 participants felt less frustrated after venting and although these results point to an effective way of releasing frustration, there will have to be more research done to make a conclusion.

Feel free to join Ella's presentation on Friday, April 26th, from 12:15-12:45.
