Sawyer Masuoka took Catalyst as a Junior at SAS. For his Catalyst project, Sawyer created an ankle brace that follows the modern-day trend of minimalistic athletic shoes so that his brace can be used with contemporary athletic shoes. An athlete who has faced chronic ankle injury himself, Sawyer found that ankle braces are an effective solution to injuries, but many athletes have had to revert to taping because current braces cannot be used in many shoes.
As such, Sawyer chose this project because he believes that “you can apply yourself to something best if you can literally apply yourself to it”. Touché. Ultimately, under the guidance of Dr. Wye Mun Low at Pacific Healthcare Specialist Centre, Sawyer hopes to have a physical model of his brace by the end of the yeasr. Best of luck to Sawyer!
